A "mission" is defined as a specific task, activity, purpose or objective that someone or a group is established or charged to complete. This is a wonderful way to describe why Jesus was sent to earth. Jesus had to complete specific tasks for a specific purpose to achieve a specific objective. An objective which is clearly defined in John 3:16. While that verse is probably the most familiar and quotable verse in the Christian Bible, the three versus following are likely much less so. It is certainly important and wonderful to know the reason why Jesus was sent, but it's equally important and wonderful to be clear on what he was NOT sent for. Additionally, believers need to understand that Jesus finished ALL the tasks required to complete God's plan of redemption.
